3 x 3

Exhibited in ARCTIC TERRAINNordatlantiskhus, Odense, Denmark – April 25th to August 31st, 2024

3 x 3 is a triptych of triptychs – a collaborative project where mthSTUDIOS and the artist girlinthetangerine have painted the works together under the pseudonym EC128. Three of the full nine pieces are exhibited in ARCTIC TERRAIN. In the same way that we are part of nature, part of landscape, we are landscapes in ourselves. As such, our bodies are a mirror of the terrain we inhabit. Celebrating nature is an extension of celebrating ourselves, and passion for ourselves is passion for nature. The 3 x 3 project uses acrylics to create a body of landscape from a body landscape. Like a geological map where two dimensions represent three, EC128 uses three dimensions to create two. The audience is invited to unravel the emotions, movements, energy and forms which reveal the art pieces.

Red is an important colour in Greenlandic culture. In Greenland's flag, the central red portion represents the life-giving sun. Born from the blackness of winter and spreading over the snow-covered land and sea, the canvas recalls the early spring. Concurrently, red intones the image of the blood of a seal on ice – a violence and beauty invoking the energy and conflict experienced in the creation of the piece.

While the Norse origins of 'Greenland' as a green land are couched in PR, Greenland has a wealth of verdant landscape. The absence of trees sometimes emphasise this expansive greenery over seemingly infinite vistas. Playgrounds for reindeer, ptarmigan, Arctic foxes. At times dotted with flowers and in autumn giving way to saturated fall colours. This EC128 piece was created with a sense of youth and hopefulness.

Water is an inescapable component of Greenland, whether bound as ice – Greenland's heart, snow – it's winter shroud, or wild, tempestuous, abundant as the sea which supports the economy, transport and sustenance for Greenland's people. Repetition in motifs in the artwork reflect the energy in its creation and recall the waves of the sea.
